How Polite Are We?
Apparently not very much.
Basahin n’yo na lang ‘yung buong article for the details. Pinakita nito na minsan reputation can be so far from actual character.
The experiment was done in Manila, arguably the country’s most cosmopolitan city. Surely a thank you can be expected from shop assistants, especially if you’ve just made a purchase. ‘Yung pinto siguro medyo understandable pero hindi rin, eh, kasi ako lang I make it a point to hold the door kapag meron nakasunod sa’kin – babae man o lalake.
So bakit nga? Una, siguro mahiyain lang talaga tayo around strangers. This is probably a trait we share with out neighbors since Asia performed the poorest in the politeness survey. Ang mga Western kasi kapag nasasalubong mo ready with a smile, tayo hindi na halos suplado pa ang dating. To our family, friends, friends of friends, neighbors of classmates of a second-degree cousin we are more than willing to go out of our way to perform greats acts of kindness.
Crime has made us cynical. Wary na tayo, as attested by one Filipina interviewed for the article, na baka modus operandi ng mandurukot or something ‘yung mga naglalaglag ng papel d’yan o sinumang seemingly in trouble. Hay!
